The Charlotte Women's Bar (CWB) is the Charlotte Chapter of the NCAWA.  The CWB was formed in 2004 to provide its membership a unique and personally supportive professional network.  The CWB is dedicated to promoting the interests of women attorneys in the Charlotte area.  Our objective is to help our members through education, networking, community involvement, mentoring opportunities and the chance to just have fun with peers.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We are starting early this year!

The committee began its work on the 2013 Fighting For Women With Fashion fundraiser for the Domestic Violence Women’s Shelter. We hope by starting early this year we will raise even more money than we have in the past. But, we need your help!

For the past 2 years, only a few people have volunteered to assist with gaining sponsorships from law firms or other businesses related to law. Frankly, we need more than just a few people to assist us in contacting firms and businesses for donations. So, if you would like to take an active role this year with helping make the 2013 event even better than last year, please contact one of our community service co-chairs – Kristen Shearin kris_shearin@yahoo.com or Kaylan Gaudio kgaudio@kennedyfamilylaw.com both of whom will also be co-chairing the sponsorship committee for the awesome event. Our next general meeting is on March 5th. We’d love to hear from you before then so we can report to the committee that we have a team on board and ready to go. We know this process can be lengthy but if we are persistent we should raise more money than ever for battered women and children!

And there’s more – if you are unable to commit to helping with sponsorships, the committee needs assistance with gathering unique items for the silent auction. Last year we raised almost $3,000 and would like to surpass that figure in 2013.

So, while the event is several months off – looking at the first week in October, and while we are still trying to find a local celebrity to help us showcase the event – we need your help now. Please become an active member of the Charlotte Women’s Bar and help with this terrific event.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of your 2013 board members.

RECENT EVENTS

Tamara Huckert and Renee Hughes, 2013 co-chairs of the programs committee got the Charlotte Women’s Bar off to a fabulous start this year!

On January 13, 2013, we were all treated to a wonderful lunch followed by a fantastic program by none other than Ramona Holloway – a diva in her own right – having her own radio show on 107.9 The Link, a Sunday morning radio program entitled The Satisfied Life, and co-host of Charlotte Today on the Charlotte NBC affiliate, WCNC. She has molded herself into one of the top personalities in the country.

Ramona had us laughing, crying, and reflecting as she shared with us many personal moments of her life. We also met Ramona’s mother, who attended the luncheon with Ramona. Miss Wheezy, as she is affectionately known, is clearly a very proud mother, and we were thrilled Ramona took the time to lunch with us! As always, our partner, Bonterra, put together a terrific lunch.

Stay tuned for our next event, scheduled for April! It’s sure to be another great lunch program and opportunity to socialize with other attorneys from the great city of Charlotte!

MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to advance and encourage women's participation in the legal profession by offering programs designed to meet the unique professional and personal needs of women attorneys.

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP

When you join the NCAWA and CWB, you can expect a networking forum for business development, access to professional programs, mentoring and leadership opportunities, rewarding work on our committees, and more.  Our vision is to build a strong community of women lawyers who make a difference in the profession and in society at large.  Our goals are to increase the effective participation by women in the justice system, in public office, and within the legal profession; to promote the rights of women under the law; and to promote the welfare of the women attorneys of North Carolina. The benefits of CWB membership include:

An Instant Network:  Membership opens doors.  Through your involvement, you have the opportunity to network with over 500 members, both women and men, from the judiciary, law firms, corporations, non-profits, and the government, including more than 150 in the Charlotte area.  Members support each other by providing business referrals, developing mentoring relationships, serving as role models, and creating opportunities for one another.  In 2010, the NCAWA also launched an online job bank accessible only to members.

Recognition and Visibility: We all know it’s awkward to toot your own horn.  Let the NCAWA and CWB promote your accomplishments and achievements in our newsletters and e-blasts, and on our website.  In addition, NCAWA maintains an online member directory, which puts the entire NCAWA membership at your fingertips, making networking easier than ever.  On a local level, CWB nominates its members for various professional accolades, including, among others, Charlotte’s 50 Most Influential Women and Charlotte Business Journal’s Forty under 40, and guides its members through the associated applications.

First-Class Events:  Each year, the NCAWA hosts an annual conference that provides members an opportunity to meet and hear from prominent individuals in the profession.  In addition, CWB hosts quarterly lunch seminars, which focus on the advancement of women attorneys in both private and public employment with topics that include substantive legal issues, practice development, career development, and matters of general concern to all women.   CWB’s programs, which typically offer CLE credit, feature experts, authors, dignitaries, and government officials.  CWB also hosts quarterly socials, which encourage its members to broaden their local network.

Leadership Development.  Members have the opportunity to join one or more NCAWA and CWB committees to gain invaluable experience and to establish a great foundation for further leadership positions.

Publications: All NCAWA members receive a subscription to Self-Evident, the NCAWA's member newsletter, which covers issues of concern to women in the law, profiles women leaders, and substantive articles written by members, and full access to the NCAWA website, including the CWB page.
