Robinson Fills District Court Vacancy in Fifth Judicial District

Robin Wicks Robinson has been appointed to the District Court bench in the 5th Judicial District (New Hanover and Pender counties). She fills the vacancy created by the death of Judge John Carroll. Robinson is a member of the NCBA and its Family Law and Dispute Resolution sections. The NCAWA supported Robinson's appointment to the bench.

Meet Our New Executive Director, Traci Hobson

It is with great pleasure that I announce that, earlier this summer, the NCAWA welcomed Traci L. Hobson as our new Executive Director. I must say a huge "thank you" to Terra Atkinson, your President-Elect, and Mindy Staley, who handled the entire process and interviewed a number of well-qualified candidates. Also, our former Executive Director Cindy Jones, who stepped in as Interim ED in January of this year, provided invaluable input as to the ED's role and also participated in the interviewing process.

Traci is excited to be serving a membership of women lawyers, as she is a lawyer herself. She grew up in Greensboro and Winston-Salem and then went to law school in Tulsa, OK because her area of interest was Native American legal issues. In fact, she holds an LL.M. in Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy from the University of Arizona and taught Native American Law at NCCU Law for three years. Traci's career experience also includes several government and non-profit positions. She was a Court Management Specialist for the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts; Court Solicitor for the Tohono O'Odham Indian Nation; Tribal Prosecutor for the White Mountain Apache Tribe; Program Attorney for the National Judicial College; and Director of Governmental Affairs for the National American Indian Housing Council in Washington, DC. We are thrilled to bring Traci's background and experience to bear with us at NCAWA - not least of which is her experience in successfully writing and reviewing large-scale grants!

To give everyone some flavor of her personality, I asked Traci to share a few fun facts about herself with us. Here's what she had to say:

• "I once taught a country couples dancing class at Guilford Technical Community College."

• "I ride motorcycles."

• "I'm a vegetarian."

• "I can trace my lineage to Thomas Hobson of England, the famous Hobson about whom the phrase 'Hobson's Choice' was coined."

It is with great sadness that we share with you that legislator and long-time NCAWA member Bertha "B" Merrill Holt passed away today in Burlington at the age of 93. She served our state in the legislature for nearly twenty years and is credited with helping to spearhead the repeal of the law which permitted husbands to rape their wives in our state.

The North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys (NCAWA) is the organization where women lawyers in North Carolina come together to build important personal and professional relationships. At the NCAWA, our vision is to build a strong community of women lawyers who make a difference in the profession and in society at large. We believe a strong community of women lawyers is essential to the administration of justice.

At the NCAWA, our goals are to increase the effective participation by women in the justice system, in public office, and within the legal profession; to promote the rights of women under the law; and to promote the welfare of the women attorneys of North Carolina.

In addition to our newly-designed, interactive website, the NCAWA publishes a quarterly newsletter (“Self-Evident”) and monthly e-blast (“e-Connection”). Also, on an annual basis, the NCAWA hosts a fall conference that offers timely educational seminars, continuing legal education credits, and a chance to network with other women attorneys from across the state. Additionally, the NCAWA offers members a mechanism to influence legislation, case law and the selection of judges in the state through its Government Action Committee, Lobbyist and Judicial Endorsements Committee (a registered PAC).

Get Involved in NCAWA Committees

NCAWA allows women lawyers in North Carolina to come together to build important professional relationships. Participation in our committees and groups is an important part of forming such contacts. When you join one of our committees or groups, you can expect leadership opportunities, rewarding work, a networking forum for business development, and more. Committee and group work varies in duration and time commitment, with some committees serving as limited-term “project” committees and others providing year-round guidance and oversight for issue areas. Communication and Technology Committee

The Communication and Technology Committee is charged with promoting the purposes of the NCAWA by providing informational services to the membership, to the women attorneys in North Carolina, and to the public at-large, through publication of a regularly distributed newsletter and any other publications appropriate to the needs of the organization. To accomplish these goals, this committee coordinates the creation and distribution of informational materials and manages the NCAWA's website. The committee also solicits article, papers, and web links to information that is important to North Carolina women attorneys in order to keep members informed and to encourage the exchange of ideas.

Nominations for the 2011 Balanced Life Workplace Awards are now CLOSED. Description of the BLWA The Balanced Life Workplace Awards (BLWA) are presented annually by NCAWA to employers that have distinguished themselves by establishing employment policies and practices that assist lawyers in achieving balance between their work and personal lives. Any legal employer in either the public or private sector, employing at least two or more individuals, is eligible for consideration. We will consider, among other factors, the employer’s policies and practices on work hours, office benefits or perquisites, part-time employment, flexible work schedules, leave options, effect on partnership prospects, and work-at-home or telecommuting arrangements. This year, NCAWA will be presenting the award to two categories of employers: (1) a small/medium size employer (between two and 49 attorneys); and (2) a large employer (over 50 attorneys).
