Julie Seidenstein Receives Woman Extraordinaire Award

December 7, 2011 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.)—Julie H. Seidenstein, an attorney in the Charlotte office of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, was named a 2011 Woman Extraordinaire by Business Leader magazine. Ms. Seidenstein was chosen as a recipient out of hundreds of women who were nominated for the award.

Each year, Business Leader honors the top women leaders of the South through its Women Extraordinaire awards. An award winner must be an influential leader within her company or business, with an extraordinary impact on its economic success and forward-thinking strategies.

Ms. Seidenstein works in Parker Poe’s Banking and Finance group. She focuses her practice on commercial real estate and structured finance, specifically representation of mortgage loan portfolio servicers in assumptions, cash management structures, leasing, consent and general compliance issues and representation of institutional lenders and finance companies in originating commercial real estate loans.

Ms. Seidenstein is a member of CREW Charlotte and serves as Co-Chair of the organization’s Communications Committee. She also serves as a board member, Chair of the Nominations Committee and Women in Law Mentor of the Charlotte Women’s Bar.

Additionally, Ms. Seidenstein is a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar Lunch with a Lawyer Program, which is a mentoring program targeting rising eighth grade students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Volunteer attorney mentors meet with students for lunch to gain a better understanding of the role attorneys play in everyday life.

Ms. Seidenstein received her JD, magna cum laude, from Seattle University and her BA, magna cum laude, from the University of San Diego.

NCAWA Mentor - Mentee Program Needs Mentors!

Greetings NCAWA members! Many of you know about the NCAWA Mentoring Program. Some of you are currently matched with a mentor/mentee or have participated in the program in the past. Others have not yet participated in the program.

Over the last few months, many law students and new attorneys have joined NCAWA and expressed interest in participating in the program. These members face unique challenges transitioning from law student to lawyer. The NCAWA Mentoring Program is designed to help with this transition.

Mentors give students and new lawyers invaluable resources, practical advice, and support to aide and guide them in their careers. We need experienced practitioners who are willing to provide assistance to the next generation of women lawyers as they prepare to enter the profession and learn to deal with the realities of the practice of law.

Guest Article: Five Tips on How to Properly Negotiate with Wedding Professionals

There’s no way around it - weddings are expensive. People look for ways to reduce the expenses associated with the grand event. With the right strategy, you can minimize your wedding expenses in a host of ways. A key strategy is to negotiate properly with wedding professionals on the deals they offer. If you have a wedding planner, the job becomes easy. Experienced planners usually share good rapport with professionals and manage to get their services at subsidized rates. Here are some tips to help you negotiate with event professionals.

1. Know your budget. You will need to have your total budget for the wedding written down before entering into negotiations with different professionals. It is also important to fix a budget of the amount you are willing to spend on each line item like food, decoration and audio-visuals. This makes it easier for you to bargain with the respective event professionals.

2. Hire services from a single event professional instead of dealing with many. Event professionals offer discounts on bulk orders. The more services you hire from one event professional, greater is the scope to ask for discounts. So, opting for multiple services from a single dealer may be profitable rather than dealing with many.

3. Talk in terms of competition in the market. While negotiating with an event professional, put forward the deals offered by others operating in the market. This is a good way of asking for incentives. However, don’t forget that an event professional also has to survive in the market. Therefore, they have to make a certain amount of profit to do so. Bargain to get a good deal but at the same time consider the experience, standpoint and livelihood of your supplier. In other words, don’t ask for McDonald’s hamburger prices when ordering a Kobe beef hamburger at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

4. Establish a good rapport with event professionals. While negotiating with an event professional, rapport building is necessary. You should be able to convince an event professional that he/she will get good business from you in the long run. This may be another incentive for an event professional to offer you a decent deal. Also, the event professional will make additional efforts to make your event successful.

5. Hire an efficient wedding planner. By hiring the services of a wedding planning company, you can do away with the hassles of approaching each and every dealer and negotiating with them. The professionals do it for you. All you have to do is provide them with your budget and requirements. They will get you decent deals. Such services also take stress off of couples which allows them to have more fun during the wedding planning process and on the wedding day.

Robin Wicks Robinson has been appointed to the District Court bench in the 5th Judicial District (New Hanover and Pender counties). She fills the vacancy created by the death of Judge John Carroll. Robinson is a member of the NCBA and its Family Law and Dispute Resolution sections. The NCAWA supported Robinson's appointment to the bench.

It is with great sadness that we share with you that legislator and long-time NCAWA member Bertha "B" Merrill Holt passed away today in Burlington at the age of 93. She served our state in the legislature for nearly twenty years and is credited with helping to spearhead the repeal of the law which permitted husbands to rape their wives in our state.

The NCAWA Judicial Endorsements Committee (JEC) is a registered political action committee which makes non-partisan endorsements and campaign contributions in judicial elections. Every NCAWA member is a member of the JEC PAC unless the member indicates on her annual membership form that she prefers not to be. The JEC follows set criteria and procedures in making endorsements. The JEC endorses a candidate for judicial office based on the following criteria: (1) the candidate's legal skill and ability; (2) the candidate's experience as a professional and in the community; (3) the candidate's competence, legal experience, temperament, and demeanor for a judicial position; and (4) the candidate's support for women in the legal profession and for the rights of women under the law. In 2005, NCAWA established the “NCAWA Fund” at the Foundation for the Carolinas (the “NCAWA Fund"). The NCAWA Fund at the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) entity and all gifts to the Fund are tax deductible. The NCAWA Fund was initially funded by an anonymous member of NCAWA. This generous donor also agreed to match all gifts to the NCAWA Fund up to $20,000.00! A special thank you goes out to this special donor for her wisdom and vision in recognizing how the NCAWA Fund can greatly impact NCAWA’s future for years to come.

While the NCAWA Fund is designed to be flexible and can change over time to meet the ever-evolving charitable and educational needs of our organization, the NCAWA Fund is currently used to fund the law student scholarships that NCAWA presents annually at each of the seven North Carolina law schools. The Foundation Committee is primarily responsible for administering NCAWA's scholarship program.

The Fundraising Committee is responsible for, among other things, seeking sponsorships from outside sources - both monetary and in-kind donations - and developing partnerships with business groups and service providers to offer special benefits for our members. Funds collected from outside sources can be directed towards the organization's general fund or specifically towards our scholarship fund. Our general fund goes towards the operation of the organization, including chapter support, and also is used for community outreach projects. Each year, we host an annual conference that provides our members with the opportunity to obtain continuing legal education credits on topics that are timely for women attorneys and for the State of North Carolina. The conference includes an awards banquet that honors women and law firms who have advanced the mission and goals of the NCAWA.
