Ward Black Law Now Handling Veterans Disability Cases

The Greensboro, North Carolina office of Ward Black Law has announced the implementation of a new practice area assisting United States military veterans in obtaining disability benefits through the Veterans Administration. With the VA experiencing a very high number of new claims and an estimated half-million claims in backlog status at the start of 2013, Ward Black Law is stepping forward to help veterans through the difficult and time-consuming claims appeal process.

Attorney and U.S. Air Force veteran Afi Johnson-Parris has joined Ward Black Law to lead this new practice area for the firm. Johnson-Parris is accredited by the Veterans Administration to represent veterans in the filing and appeals process for obtaining disability compensation. Ward Black Law attorneys Paul Daniels and Gerard H. Davidson, Jr., both U.S. Army veterans, will assist Johnson-Parris in this new practice area along with U.S. Army veteran Dan Dutilly, who recently joined Ward Black Law as Client Relations Manager.

NCAWA to Host 2013 Spring Fling at the Beach!

NCAWA is excited to host a Spring Fling Retreat May 3-4, 2013 in the Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area.

Programming will include networking and social opportunities, as well as a strategic planning session and a CLE offering.

As we continue to finalize the event details, we need to get an idea of membership interest. If you are interested in this event and would like to attend, or if you are interested in helping with the event details, please e-mail Melissa K. Walker. A good gauge of membership participation will allow us to adequately plan for space and programming needs.

Seeking Nominations for NCBA H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award

The Nominating and Public Service Awards Committee is seeking nominations for the NCBA H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award.

Criteria to be considered in the selection of the Award recipients shall include the following definitions and descriptions of the Renaissance Lawyer:

· An attorney who has demonstrated excellence in the pursuit of his or her profession and respects judicial officers, other lawyers, clients and members of the public;

· An attorney who serves as an example by inspiring others to renew their commitments to professionalism, integrity, intellectual achievement, civility, and service in the practice of law;

· An attorney who provides pro bono services to those in need of such services;

· An attorney who provides service to the profession locally, in the state and/or nation, including but not limited to service through professional organizations such as local, state, and national bar associations;

· An attorney who provides service to the community through civic, charitable, or religious organizations;

· An attorney who is currently active in North Carolina, including lawyers in private practice, public or government service, judges, corporate counsel and academicians; and

· An attorney who is a member in good standing of the North Carolina State Bar and the North Carolina Bar Association.

Susan Dotson-Smith Appointed to District Court Bench

Susan Dotson-Smith, a longtime NCAWA member and past president of the NCAWA, has been appointed to the District Court bench for the 28th Judicial District (Buncombe County). She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Rebecca Knight. Dotson-Smith spent 20 years in private practice in western North Carolina prior to becoming assistant clerk of Superior Court in Buncombe County last year. Read more.

Balanced Life Workplace Award

Description of the BLWA

The Balanced Life Workplace Award (BLWA) is presented annually by NCAWA to an employer that has distinguished itself by establishing employment policies and practices that assist lawyers in achieving balance between their work and personal lives. Any legal employer in either the public or private sector, employing at least two or more individuals, is eligible for consideration. We will consider, among other factors, the employer’s policies and practices on work hours, office benefits or perquisites, part-time employment, flexible work schedules, leave options, effect on partnership prospects, and work-at-home or telecommuting arrangements.

Purpose of the BLWA

Increased participation of women in the profession has helped galvanize a consciousness regarding issues of work and life balance. Most women combine legal careers with significant family responsibilities and personal development goals. These responsibilities and goals are shared by a growing number of male lawyers. Moreover, attorneys are increasingly likely to have caretaking obligations for elderly family members, a trend that is expected to increase into the future. The profession needs sensible options in the workplace to meet family demands, encourage healthy activities outside of work and still perform capably in our professional capacity. The need for a better balance between a lawyer’s personal and professional life is an issue for all of us.

It is with great sadness that we share with you that legislator and long-time NCAWA member Bertha "B" Merrill Holt passed away today in Burlington at the age of 93. She served our state in the legislature for nearly twenty years and is credited with helping to spearhead the repeal of the law which permitted husbands to rape their wives in our state.

The Government Action Committee's goal is to promote issues of concern to NCAWA within the legislative and administrative branches of government. Its purposes are to: Study issues related to NCAWA objectives in order to educate its members; Recommend positions on those issues to the NCAWA lobbyist, its members, and the Board of Directors; Organize advocacy to the legislative and administrative branches of government on positions taken by the organization; Maintain the presence of the NCAWA in the legislative process; and Maintain contact with legislative committees of other bar groups and women's organizations. Bar Diversity Committee

The North Carolina State Bar is responsible for the regulation of the legal profession. Unlike voluntary bar associations, every North Carolina licensed attorney must be a member of the State Bar and is subject to it rules and regulations. The State Bar is governed by a body of Councilors elected from each judicial district, and three appointed public members. There are currently sixty elected State Bar Councilors of which only ten are women and only a few represent racial minorities. The Bar Diversity Committee works to increase diversity at the North Carolina State Bar by promoting the election and appointment of women and minorities to the State Bar Council, its Committees, Agencies, and Boards.
