About NCAWA

The North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys (NCAWA) is the organization where women lawyers in North Carolina come together to build important personal and professional relationships. The NCAWA is about women helping women. When you join the NCAWA, you can expect leadership opportunities, rewarding work on our committees, a networking forum for business development, and more.

At the NCAWA, our vision is to build a strong community of women lawyers who make a difference in the profession and in society at large. We believe a strong community of women lawyers is essential to the administration of justice.

At the NCAWA, our goals are to increase the effective participation by women in the justice system, in public office, and within the legal profession; to promote the rights of women under the law; and to promote the welfare of the women attorneys of North Carolina.

In addition to our newly-designed, interactive website, the NCAWA publishes a quarterly newsletter (“Self-Evident”) and monthly e-blast (“e-Connection”). Also, on an annual basis, the NCAWA hosts a fall conference that offers timely educational seminars, continuing legal education credits, and a chance to network with other women attorneys from across the state. Additionally, the NCAWA offers members a mechanism to influence legislation, case law and the selection of judges in the state through its Government Action Committee, Lobbyist and Judicial Endorsements Committee (a registered PAC).

If you have questions about the NCAWA or how to join and become involved, please contact NCAWA's Executive Director or the Membership Chair, Lesley Albritton.

Bar Diversity Committee

The North Carolina State Bar is responsible for the regulation of the legal profession. Unlike voluntary bar associations, every North Carolina licensed attorney must be a member of the State Bar and is subject to it rules and regulations. The State Bar is governed by a body of Councilors elected from each judicial district, and three appointed public members. There are currently sixty elected State Bar Councilors of which only ten are women and only a few represent racial minorities. The Bar Diversity Committee works to increase diversity at the North Carolina State Bar by promoting the election and appointment of women and minorities to the State Bar Council, its Committees, Agencies, and Boards.

Chapter Development and Support Committee

The Chapter Development and Support Committee facilitates relations between the state and existing chapters. When practical, the committee provides support for statewide programs, ensures consistent rules, and offers guidelines and orientation to chapter officers. The committee also helps the Board of Directors identify opportunities for expansion and assist with the creation of new chapters. Whenever possible, each chapter designates at least one member to serve on this committee. The President-Elect serves as Chair to this committee.

Nominating and Public Service Awards Committee

The Nominating and Public Service Awards Committee has played a crucial role in assisting women attorneys in their quest to be appointed to the judiciary and commissions, where women continue to be under-represented. We make endorsements to state and federal judicial positions, State Bar Council Seats, and any other appointments that will further the goals of the organization. The committee evaluates requests for endorsements and makes appropriate recommendations to the Governor or other appointing authority. In addition to its work on judicial appointments, the committee has helped increase the numbers of women on boards and commissions of the North Carolina State Bar, such as the Disciplinary Hearing Commission, the Board of Law Examiners, and the Board of Legal Specialization. For our own organization, the committee selects recipients of the Gwyneth B. Davis public service awards, which are presented at the organization's annual meeting, and assists the President with...

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee works primarily on recruiting new members and retaining current members. Income from membership dues is the primary source of NCAWA's operating funds. The recruitment efforts of this committee and the work of the Executive Director are critical to the survival of the organization. The Membership Committee Wants to Hear From You! Please call, write, or email Membership Committee Chair Lesley Albritton with your news: certifications, presentations, publications, awards, appointments, exhibits, etc., are all items the NCAWA membership would like to acknowledge in a “Member News” article. Feel free to include a photo if you like. Please also let Lesley know if you would like to be the subject of an entire article or profile (referred to as A Member You Should Know) that would contain further biographical information. In each NCAWA newsletter, there will be one A Member You Should Know column per Self-Evident (NCAWA's quarterly newsletter)...

Member Benefits

Leadership Development We encourage our members to become involved in one or more of our committees. The experience gained is invaluable, and provides a great foundation for further leadership positions. Professional Development Each year, through our Chapters and Annual Conference, the NCAWA organizes a wide variety of dynamic programs. Typically held during lunchtime or after work, our programs address topics that include substantive legal issues, practice development, career development, and matters of general concern to all women. These programs feature experts, authors, dignitaries, and government officials, many of whom are our very own members. An Instant Network Membership in the NCAWA opens doors. Through your involvement in the NCAWA, you have the opportunity to network with women and men who are at the very top of our profession. Members of the NCAWA support each other, developing mentoring relationships, serving as role models, and creating opportunities for one another....

Government Action Committee

The Government Action Committee's goal is to promote issues of concern to NCAWA within the legislative and administrative branches of government. Its purposes are to: Study issues related to NCAWA objectives in order to educate its members; Recommend positions on those issues to the NCAWA lobbyist, its members, and the Board of Directors; Organize advocacy to the legislative and administrative branches of government on positions taken by the organization; Maintain the presence of the NCAWA in the legislative process; and Maintain contact with legislative committees of other bar groups and women's organizations.
