MONTHLY LUNCHEON: Wake Women Attorneys invites you to attend its monthly luncheon on Thursday, February 9, 2012. It will be held at 12:00 pm at Sitti located at 137 S Wilmington St. Raleigh, N.C. 27601. Telephone: (919) 239-4070. 

Our speaker will be Judge Linda McGee.  Judge Linda McGee is the second most senior judge on the N.C. Court of Appeals, having served on the Court for the past sixteen years. She is a member of the Chief Justice’s Access to Justice Commission and serves as a trustee on the N.C. IOLTA Board. Judge McGee has co-chaired the NCBA Law-Related Education Committee and is past chair of the Civic Education Consortium at the UNC School of Government. Prior to serving on the Court, Judge McGee practiced law in Boone for 17 years. She is an emeritus member of the N.C. Board of Law Examiners and a founding member of the N.C. Association of Women Attorneys.

Our speaker will be Elizabeth L. "Betsy" Smith, PhD  who is a Leadership Development Expert. Betsy holds a PhD in Organizational Leadership and works as a coach to help clients achieve personal and/or professional goals.  She also co-authored Second Blooming for Women: Growing a Life that Matters after Fifty with Kathleen V. Logan.  Betsy will be speaking on the topic of Women’s Leadership.  She will share techniques to grow your career while creating balance in your life.

December 2011

Our speaker will be Judge Robert N. "Bob" Hunter, Jr., who will present a Substance Abuse CLE, "Your Brother and Sister's Keeper - Duty to others in our profession."  Judge Hunter was elected in November, 2008 to serve an eight-year term as a Judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.  He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and its law school.  Before election, Judge Hunter practiced law with the firm of Hunter, Higgins, Miles, Elam and Benjamin, PLLC, as managing partner with a concentration in civil litigation, including real property, decedent's estates, securities, and election law.  Judge Hunter was in the first class of certified mediators in North Carolina and continues this work with the court's mediation program.  Judge Hunter currently serves as immediate Past President of BarCares, Inc., an affiliate of the North Carolina Bar Association which focuses on delivery of programs and counseling services to meet the psychological health needs of the bench and bar.

Our speaker will be Catharine Biggs-Arrowood. Ms. Arrowood is a partner at Parker Poe, where she litigates and arbitrates for both large and small businesses and she has considerable experience with regulated companies. She resolves problems that threaten your business. Her clients have included utilities, insurance companies, accounting and law firms, health care and biotech firms, banks and a commercial jet engine repair company with worldwide facilities. Ms. Arrowood has lectured and written on various aspects of complex litigation, including managing complex cases, federal civil procedure, arbitration and mediation. She currently chairs the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Rules Advisory Committee and the International Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Arrowood served as an associate attorney general, handling antitrust matters for the North Carolina Department of Justice.

CHARITY EVENT: Please join Wake Women Attorneys for our 2011 Charity Event to benefit Interact of Wake County on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Tir Na Nog Irish Pub & Restaurant!  Tickets are $25 per person, or $45 per couple, and include complimentary appetizers and two complimentary drinks per person.  You will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win various items donated from local merchants! Afterwards, we invite you to continue your evening in the main area of Tir Na Nog for Local Band/Local Beer Thursday, which showcases great bands from around the Triangle and specials on North Carolina draft beers.

Our speaker will be Nancy Welsh, who is an Affordable Housing Expert, Social Entrepreneur, Founder and CEO of Builders of Hope, a non-profit organization based in North Carolina. The former advertising executive for Coca-Cola and Leo Burnett walked away from her corporate life to pursue the opportunity she recognized to recycle tear-down homes into safe, healthy affordable housing, saving millions of pounds of construction debris from already overburdened landfills in the process. She has shared her insights with national and regional outlets including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, PBS, the "CBS Evening News" and The News & Observer. Nancy Welsh has been recognized as an innovator in affordable housing and green building. Together, Nancy Welsh and Builders of Hope are rebuilding our country using existing housing inventory to create beautiful communities of rehabbed, green affordable housing from what would otherwise be tear downs.

Our speakers will be Sarah Jessica Farber and Michele Luecking-Sunman, attorneys for the North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services. North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services, Inc. (NCPLS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) law firm located in Raleigh, NC. NCPLS's lawyers serve the almost 40,000 men and women incarcerated by the North Carolina Department of Correction. They also monitor conditions in county jails throughout the state. Their core mission is to protect clients' constitutional rights by challenging illegal convictions and sentences and by ensuring safe and humane conditions of confinement.

In addition to litigating their clients' cases in state and federal courts, they also provide inmates with general information and advice concerning legal rights and responsibilities, work towards administrative resolutions of legitimate problems, and provide information to discourage pursuit of unnecessary litigation.

Dr. Guerdat holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Fordham University, a Masters of Science from UNC Chapel Hill in Therapeutic Recreation, and a doctorate in Human Resource Development from North Carolina State University.

Our speaker will be Dean Melissa Essary. Dean Essary became the fourth dean of Campbell Law School in 2006.  Under her leadership, the law school made its historic relocation from Buies Creek, North Carolina, to Raleigh.  Dean Essary serves in a number of leadership roles in the city, which includes service on several boards of directors.  In addition, she regularly speaks to legal and business groups across the state on the topic of leadership.  Dean Essary was a trial and appellate attorney in Dallas, Texas for five years.  She handled a variety of cases, from complex commercial cases to products liability cases.
